Many ULDB racing boats have no cleats at all...

for example there is a Syndey 38 around here I have seen tied up at the dock by clove hitches on the lifeline stanchions, there being no other choice. Another example is a Santa Cruz 50 which was in the shop when mine was being built. The cap shroud chainplates were a joke, not sure what they thought kept them in the boat. No backing plates on any hardware were apparent. It was light though!
