While I believe it is possible to turn off the AIS transponder. I doubt they would bother unless they were in pirate waters and I have no intent of going there.

I have observed ships in port actually turning off their GPS and the AIS reporting their position as 0 degrees N and 0 degrees W. It was a bit mind blowing when my AIS display showed a vessel thousands of miles away until I realized what was happening. So much for requirements to have GPS integrated into AISB but not big ship AIS.
