Still, it was blowing 20 gusting to 25 from the NW so I suspect the waves were still running 4 feet or so. The currents and their directions to the wind can form a short deep sea around that island.

But on the off chance your reply was not sarcasm, but an actual question, then, I recommend you do what I did with this shot. Take the seas from a good distance away, half mile or more, and use a medium or short focal length. That will spread the seas apart and make them appear flatter. Anything short of a big breaker, will disappear shot this way.

Conversely, if you want to make waves look at least as big as they are(hard to achieve with a lense), shoot them closely, from a boat or shore, and use a very long focal length.
