It's that other technology that is the dinosaur... But soon everyone is going to LTE anyway... 4G technology.
The truth is GSM was government mandated in Europe, which is why it exists there.
Of course you can always get a MiFi device and use whatever local cell technology is available... the MiFi converts it to WiFi. (and yes, for the record, I have a vested interest in MiFi)
