They hacked anyone they felt might lead them to a good story... Some 7000 phones are alleged to have been hacked... not just CEOs or Royals.

But I do understand your thinking... that you are not likely to be in such a position, and after all, regardless of the strength of the technology, it is more important to get something that works in most places you may potentially go to... hard to argue with convenience.
