I see lots of user installed electronics and many more failures from DIY installs than from a pro.
Considering the cost of modern day electronics and how much the operators of those vessels place on the instruments.....having a NMEA/CMET installer do the work is not a bad investment......I don't consider the participants on this board to be typical either, the level of expertise here is much higher than the general boating public.
Certification costs from NMEA run about $600 plus membership, plus many electronics companies require certifications via their training protocols, it costs money to attend those things.
To Justins orginal post, find someone good and it is worth every $$.
