It's not so much that I don't trust them

I'd just rather DIY. I enjoy messsing around on the boat doing jobs almost as much as sailing her. I did hire an expert mechanic to do the connections and line up my new diesel for the warrenty and he did a good job but I did a lot of the work myself so I'd know what was where. I've re-rigged, repainted, rewired and repaired most everything else myself. I'm no doubt slower than the pro but maybe more careful. My philosophy is that I'll take a crack at it and if I get uncomfortable I'll pay to fix or finish it. Any extra costs to clean up my mess would be considered "tuition" for learning something new. It is a little easier to talk myself into DIY around where I sail anyway since there are not very many professionals to do it even if you wanted...
