We did a couple seasons there, driving from Vermont. That gave us a great base to explore the area between Casco and Penobscot Bays. Boothbay like some other areas, has a long drive down a neck. And those can sometimes have traffic in season, heavy traffic. You get to know the times to avoid.
Road distance on the coast of Maine can be surprising. If you continue on instead of driving down the neck into Boothbay, it's not all that much farther to Penobscot Bay, on the road. But you're not likely to get to Penobscot Bay from Boothbay by boat and back, unless you have a week or more of time to enjoy the trip.
