I used to live in Camden, and my Mom lived there until she passed away, so I have made the drive to the Midcoast area numerous times. One trick is to time things so that you do Route 1 at night, arriving at Rockland or Camden first thing in the morning. I just pretend it is night watch offshore. I've done it that way dozens of times and you don't get caught behind all the RVs and sightseers in the summer. It can make a difference of two hours for me. But, the general point is very valid--check out your drive before plunking down for a mooring in Maine. Maine is spectacular cruising, and you can't beat the scenic beauty anywhere, but it does have some downfalls. For one the water is generally too cold for swimming, and I have found the wind is not as reliable in the summer months. Fog doesn't bother me--can make things more interesting--but it can be cold on those days. Hey, I don't think anybody should go to Maine! Stay away! Seriously, don't go there! (Leave it for the rest of us, please.)
