The retirement downsize is a risky business. Many people don't research the housing in an area and get lured by lower prices. "It's not that far, we'll just drive there...." The downsize can be a one way trip.
That and completely related health care industry, has to be our fastest growing business here. Penbay Hospital in town is expanding and all outlying commercial areas seem to be filling more with healthcare related services. A lot of glossy catalogues are luring retirees to buy here.
But all a retirement/assisted living housing project needs, is dirt and a good brochure. I can't get over some of what they DON'T say, and that includes our area. Sure, we're not going to show seniors falling left and right on the sheet of ice out their door that happens(often), anymore than you'll see seniors covered in mold after two months stuck in an airconditioned shoebox down south.
But to over embellish rural life into a sort of Town and Country atmosphere seems criminal to me. Rent for a year, that's a good idea before buying anywhere I think.
