The J105 I race on, we usually hit about 6-7 kts in about 10-12kts of wind on most points of sail, but it will plane, and we have had it doing 15 kts downwind with the chute in about 18kts of wind. The boat starts to make some interesting humming noises at around 8-9 kts of boat speed.
