Assuming 12k apparent wind

At about 60-80 degrees apparent wind angle we're sailing in the 7-8-9+ ranges, at 20 knots apparent wind we're sailing in the low teens. Bear in mind my boat is pretty heavy for a tri. Tom's new boat would probably run away from mine under all but heavy conditions. My boat, being larger and heavier, would handle bigger seas and higher winds. I sail with full main and genoa up to about 22k apparent, 1st reef genoa 20 up to about 25, first reef main up to 30, second reef main and genoa up to about 45, then I strike the genny above that with double reefed main. I've never sailed in 50+ knots of wind but yes I have motored through that. It sucks.

Generally my speed is determined by light winds and whether we deploy light wind specialty sails. Depending on how much patience we have at the moment, we usually turn on the engine if we drop below 4 or 5 knots sustained (which means about 5 or 6 knots apparent wind). If we have above 7 knots apparent we sail unless we have to push for some reason.
