I understand what you're saying. There are sounds on a sailing machine that are wonderful. Many are just that, noise.
One of our favorite noises is the wind generator. The Admiral quite often loves it. Hearing it slight hum tells us it's charging the batteries. When we're sleeping on the hook and the wind pipes up to more than 15 it tells us changes are in the works. On the other side, anytime we're under sail I turn it off, can't stand the damn noise and would rather listen to the sound of the wind in the sails and water rushing past the hull. That's when I like the hiss.
Noise, don't want it down below although I will admit the sound of the water when you're on passage in the v-birth underway at a good clip in flat water is wonderful.
