I think they're likely to prevent someone from swimming downward (and free) in event of a capsize. I've read about cases of people becoming entrapped by lines and nets, or in a cabin (in monohulls too) while the PFD prevented escape. You need to balance that against the possibility of being knocked unconscious and not being able to manually inflate a PFD.

Just something to consider.
