On Passage, I painted them same color as the cabin top. Worked perfectly for decades. 
I used mahogany rails, cut them as needed, primed and painted along with the deck. It worked perfectly for me, no more maintenance than the cabin top. I already had enough varnish areas to keep me occupado.
