Is 1" round the holy grip, er grail of handrails? 
In Response To: Those might actually not be a easy to really grab for a smaller hand. They look nice, though.

() I almost think I'd prefer something a little larger, and my mitts aren't huge. 
I found these on line by a custom builder but no cross section. Lumber sizing makes me think most will be 1" in thickness.
