ALL of our charts have errors - paper, raster, CMap and Navionics. The only error free charts I have are ones I made myself.
You have a problem with your perceive treatment by the company Navionics regarding a charting app put out by them. This is a completely separate issue from their charts, and your experience is valid as far as that goes. But complain to CMap about their errors and see how they respond.
Again, point me to a set of charts of the SW Caribe that do not have any errors. Unless you can do this, it is disingenuous to refer to Navionic charts as toys not suitable for navigation and misleading and misrepresented unless you refer to all error-filled charts in the same manner. Even the paper ones.
It is valid to point out where certain charts are better in certain areas than others. This is a great help to everyone cruising. Having used paper, Navionics and CMap throughout Columbia and Panama (including San Blas), my experience is that there isn't any differences in the number of errors - only in the specific errors. Certain charts are better in certain places. Ironically, the paper charts are the most error-filled.
Expecting and excepting chart errors and compensating for them through good navigation practices has be de riguer for centuries. I make my own charts and compensate existing ones with these data. I am picky about products, but have reasonable expectations about charts.
So you laid into Navionics because you found you were anchored 100' off from where their chart said you were - how did you expect them to respond? Jet right down to the Eastern San Blas with a survey ship and correct their charts?
I have been using electronic charts for years and my experience is that they just get better continually as the companies get better data for them. It is a big world and hard to accurately chart all of it at once. Many of the places you are expecting perfection in are simply out of the way and not a priority. But those are the same reasons we go to those places.
