I just don't like it too easy to reference.
The navigation station mounted chartplotter is visible from the cockpit if I sit on the port side and works a bit like your board. It's a bit difficult to see small stuff but it is a reference. The Admiral will (at times) sit so she can see it or in the nav station and at sometimes give me a direction, the number on an approaching buoy or confirm my direction or lack of a correct one. I again use my eyes to look, take in the situation and make sense of it all without directly looking at the chartplotter. I also have folded paper charts at hand in the cockpit when piloting in close quarters like the ICW.
As said,, "to each his own". If you haven't sunk your boat or crashed into other boaters your probably doing it right.
