OK, sometimes while on the ICW i use an Ipad but only because I'm playing Angry Birds and it's in my hands.

I keep the 12" C-series in the navigation station and go below to use it for reference. Once I see what's ahead i return to the helm and actually use my experience in reading water and navigation aids to find the route. If I get unsure I pop below, take a look and return to the helm. The idea of a chartplotter in front of me is enticing but not something I wish to get comfortable with. If I get too comfortable using it and it breaks I'll get scared.
