Power loss is related to the low voltage and high current. They are I squared R losses. As you increase the current (I) you increase the loss. That is why the power grid is 70,000 volts or more - to keep the current down.

That was Tessla's greatest invention. Edison wanted DC which meant that he needed a power generating stations every couple of miles.
