Most 3d world countries use propane tanks at their house if it's available but in order to use the tank (generally found at food markets) you had to somehow connect it to your empty tank with some sort of jury rig and use a gravity system to transfer. It was possible to get about 3/4 out of you heated up one of the tanks and cooled the other.

A real PITA! When we could find a place to fill our system we needed to take a bus and make a day of it.

We always carried a few small canisters and a brass fitting to hook it up to the main boat propane hose.

We used a lot of diesel as it was available everywhere but saved the propane whenever possible.
