That always makes me pause. I'm old school vhf and usually turn it on as soon as I get onboard, and leave it on. But I can't recall the last time I made contact with another boat. It wasn't last season, or the season before. It seems as other boats don't use it, it is becoming obsolete.
It's still a main source of weather onboard for us, but that's quickly changing. Spending 10 minutes waiting for the computer voice to give me the wind speed and direction for my spot has little comparison to the weather data on the internet.
