Hi Gene,
John has a nice writeup of the pros and cons of a Yankee with a cutter rig over at Attainable Adventure Cruising. It's well worth the $19/yr or whatever it is to support the plethora of excellent info they provide there.(nl)A few of the pros of the Yankee (vs traditional genoa) are that they reef a lot easier and hold their shape better when reefed, and you don't have to move the lead when reefing. He also feels the double headsail provides better drive, especially in heavy seas. Cons include pointing ability.
The 46 footer I sailed this summer used a Yankee / staysail combination and I liked it a lot. For this summer I am going to experiment with a 100% jib that came new with my boat and I've never used. Eventually I'll probably end up with either a ~120% genoa or a Yankee.
Good luck with the decision, Max
