Here's a pic of my little barge that I modified to have staysail from sloop...

I moved the forestay a bit forward as I had a bit much weather helm and also wanted the double anchor roller off the bow. Still, it wasn't far enough to facilitate tacking a big jib and I never sailed it with both fore sails. The staysail was for when I'd get caught out in 40 or 50 mph winds which would sometimes blow up suddenly in the lower Columbia river. Worked like a charm.

In this photo you can't see it but the anemometer on the boat taking the photo reported 35 mph winds and I'm double reefed and staysail which made a perfect balance. This is in the passage behind Tongue Point so protected from direct wind, so to speak, and no real fetch. Once out in the river there the waves were often four and five footers, quite steep and short duration.

I sailed that boat on the lower river with no engine, only oars and sail for ten years. I was a lot younger then.....
