Big (54'?) double ender named Hother owned by Isbrandtsen (Jacob?) of American Export Lines. Used a 180% genoa - two crew members would run the clew around the foredeck (like a tennis court) when tacking.
I was crew on a 37' yawl, which the owner had converted from a 30' cat boat - he swore there was some original deadwood down there somewhere. For our first race with spinnaker, I arrived at his YC to find that he'd converted a railroad tie at the edge of the parking lot to a wood lathe - where he was happily making a spinnaker pole. He read from the book 'How to Fly a Spinnaker' and we did the do - kinda like the seargeant in 'Magnificent Men'. Amazingly, it went up and flew. We progressed from that to a mizzen staysail - only reason to have a yawl! Had a fine time that summer - my first wife would come along with potato salad for the lunch.
Remember one race we were chasing Hother from Robbins Reef down towards Sandy Hook - each following sea would give us a good boost but wouldn't do much for Hother. They nervously watched us get closer and closer.
