Typically in a true cutter the mast is aft of where a sloop would be. 
Leaves more room for stays' stay and foresail to get by on a tack. Of course, as this cutter shows, a long bowsprit helps with that! I sailed on this boat from Honolulu to Astoria OR a loooong time ago with an old friend who'd been gone over six years in Mexico and Hawaii. My friend had only the main, boomed staysail and yankee under which we did adequately taking 29 1/2 days for the trip around the North Pacific High. This being an Eric design it is full keel. Slow but we did alright.

- In heavy air and a wet seaway, the higher cut will tend to avoid catching a bunch of green water that might come at it.
