When cruising we generally didn't have any trash or garbage to recycle or dispose of on land.
-Glass was broken into small pieces in a pail and dumped in deep water (+1,000 ft)
-Food garbage was minimal and tossed overboard while on passage.
-Paper was torn into small pieces and put into a bucket with water to turn it into a slurry and dumped slowly while on passage.
-Plastic was separated and stored on board until it could be melted into a puck (island fire) returned to the boat and tossed overboard in deep water.
-Cans were tossed overboard in deep water after holing.
-Oil and boat stuff (bad battery, filters, etc.) were kept on board until a proper dumping place was found (sometimes for months)
I don't think there was anything else. We were always concerned with leaving anything on an island feeling it was better to manage our crap ourselves. Managing and tossing in deep water was always the best option. I do admit that we did use a fire at times to burn stuff but we never liked doing it always bringing what didn't burn back to the boat.
