That's sad. The worst offense on New England shores, is plastic, by the ton.

Even on the most remote beaches, you can't escape it's permenance mixed amongst the mussell shells, tree wood, sea weeds and other naturally decaying high tide line. Grocery store plastic bags are the most disturbing, floating just beneath the surface or stretched over Rugosa bushes. Next are whole bottles, or broken(scary things with kids).

I hate to say it, but one of the worst offenders are fishermen. I spend a lot of time defending them because they help keep waterfront open for public access. But too often I've seen them throwing things overboard. Not long ago, watched a sternman throw a plastic bag over the rail as he quipped "whoops!" to his partner. That's pretty sad and reflects a lack of education in what the environment means to him, that he's not aware of.

I've heard these sad words more than once on the coast of Maine, "Ever see a fisherman bring garbage ashore...?" That public sentiment alone should rally them to police their own.
