On the shoulder of a straight uphill stretch of 35mph road-in great light, the driver never saw her. He was distracted(by his lunch in the passenger seat), he said, and didn't see her until she flew onto his hood and her head smashed his windshield in.
Unfortunately, she didn't have her helmet on(short half mile trip-no excuse) which would have saved her some injury. But she had a broken neck, nose and a severe laceration from the windshield that reached from her forehead to below her cheekbone(fully down to her cheekbone).
She was very lucky with the broken neck and that has since heeled. She right now(today) is having the stitches taken out of her third operation to rebuild an eyelid. This is the second skin graft attempt to making an operating eyelid so (hopefully) she won't have to wear a patch to prevent damage from her eye drying out. She feels extremely lucky, here eye works, no spinal problems and no brain damage.
Anyway,... no matter what you do on a bicycle with cars in the lane next to you, sooner or later, somebody isn't going to be paying attention. I don't think that idea works.
She misses biking to work but I doubt she'll get back on a road. No way she'll be comfortable on a bike with a car approaching from behind. She is talking about getting back on and doing some trails.
