If I lived on the East Coast, I would seriously consider a trawler or motorsailer. The weather is often uncomfortable even to sit in, and the wind unreliable. That makes a sailboat only a sometimes proposition. On the other hand the last sailboat I owned on SF Bay I put about 50 hours on the engine in 15 years of ownership and even kept the dodger folded down most days.
