Did you notice the info about AIS SART? Once you have the capability in your CP to process the AIS, it automatically pops the alert if it receives an AIS SART signal, and puts a red X onscreen where the MOB is.
Touch one button and it starts plotting a course to the MOB position. How cool is that for a short-handed crew in snotty conditions? It would of course also alert other nearby (equipped) boats. Much better to have your own vessel and/or nearby vessels (that can be there in minutes) track you than waiting (probably hours) for a SAR response to a PLB.
I showed that page to the admiral last night and we made a decision to buy a couple of these to clip on our PFDs. The smallest is around the size of a small flashlight not cheap at ~$300 each, but like any safety equipment could be well worth it if ever needed.
