... especially when we think back on what we did when we were younger. I think the most important factor that will determine how kids turn out is self-image. If they have a good self-image and the family's core values are there, then all you need is lots of luck (and time enough to round the rough edges and mellow a person out). They all stray at times, but we all learn from our mistakes. Luck comes in because we hope any damage done isn't too severe or lasting. Self-image is what determines whether they set themselves back on track, given the opportunity.
