It's not illegal to jailbreak an Iphone.

U.S. law ruled against Apple in jailbreaking an Iphone. It was only illegal by Apple's policy (they don't like it and won't support the warranty if it is), not by law. Unlocking a subsidized phone to use with a different carrier is different. That's illegal.
