My father started sailing on Lake Ontario in the early 40's on an International 14. He had moved up to a Dragon by the time I came around but really I started sailing on a Niagra 30 that he bought as a bare hull and finished. During the summer we would spend most weekends on the boat. In the mid 70's my family bought a Viking 33 that I raced on for many years. In the 70's and 80's I sailed Cadets, 420s, Lasers, sailboards and countless keel boats anyone would let me aboard. In the 90's I ended up racing on the Niagra 30 I grew up on for a few years before I bought my own boat. I took sailing lessons as a kid but I learned mostly from my father who was an excellent and very experienced sailor.
I don't remember anything before sailing, it's kind of like asking where did you learn to walk.
Here is an old picture of me at the wheel of the Viking with my dad.
