Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

I took my wife sailing on our first date. That was her first sail.

I've seen many people come into sailing over the years. It's not the easiest form of recreation for many couples. Oftne there's reluctant partner. Families complicate it or enhance it, you never know. Kids started very early seem to do the best in my experience.

I think it has a way of testing relationships and can shake loose slight "problems" that may be there prior to casting off. It's often a small space with another person, for long periods of time....

Same thing with families. It seems to work well with some, with others, it causes internal problems.

Overall, I get a feeling only about half the people we've met or known that sailed over the years, are still doing it together.

A happy couple or family on a sailboat is not an instant thing and takes time to build. Sailing will never go mainstream like Carnival Cruises or Disneyland.
