The materials have changed, so today we have fiberglass and carbon fiber and high tech lines vice hemp, and dacron vice canvas, but the basic concepts of what works as a boat (and thus the profiles) are pretty well understood, along with the compromises that are considered for the task of the design of a particular boat.
