Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

For the last 25 years we have made do with block ice on our small cruisers

and have come to terms with it, after a fashion. We actually have room for the required compressor etc, just adjacent to the icebox (far right in picture, under the teak cutting-block cover). I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on a refrigeration unit with it's worrisome power requirements and maint.

We too have an added-insulation icebox and even in the Sea of Cortez are able to preserve a cold beer for about six days with block, or four with crushed. Ice has become more available, even in some of the more remote anchorages over the last year or so and we truly have not missed refrigeration. I totaled up our cost for ice last year and it came to $50. (five months) in Mexico. Refrigeration cyphers out to many times that, when including it's attendant support groups. I would love to have an Engle portable which I consider one of the more viable options - but would have to give up berth space that is important storage for other necessities. So we muddle along with what we have - poor folks, have poor ways.
