Anybody have a good read on VHF DSC and AIS?

This EPIRB thread got me thinking about my old VHF and upgrading it. I want to wrap my brain around what DSC and AIS really offer.
I have to admit my local traffic isn't too bad, but I could see AIS being a good thing when I am near the traffic channels north of me, around Long Beach and LA.
