People wearing PFDs don't generally die of drowning

unless they're unconscious at the time when they go into the water they eventually succumb to exposure, and then they die. It's a bit of a technicality but it makes the point that you MUST be rescued soon after you go into the water, or you'll run out of time. How long depends mostly on water temp, but other factors can slow or speed it up.
