I was in the Ocean Navigator booth selling subscriptions the whole time, but I did get a chance to run around before the show opened. There seems to be a competition between catamaran builders in particular to see who can build the most space in the shortest LOA while at the same time causing traditional sailors to puke the most. I've never seen such an ugly collection of crafts--I hesitate to call them boats--in my life. However, I spoke to tons of people out doing it on ordinary sized boats that in many cases are affordable, and I talked to lots dreaming of going and wondering if they really need to start at 160 grand for a 32-footer. The answer is No! I also noted that the crowd is rapidly ageing out of the sport. I've never seen so many sailors limping by the booth, sometimes being helped along by a spouse. The industry is in trouble if that crowd represents their demographic. On the other hand in our booth sales were fantastic, and the crowd we did meet was very receptive. I think there will be a problem that 30 years down the road there won't be many of these boats that qualify as "Good Old Boats" unless folks are willing to rip out all the failed systems and simplify them. Some just won't be suitable without electric winches, windlasses, watermakers, etc. so they will be expensive to keep up, especially in old age.
