I purchased a 4 unit apartment building about 20 years ago. When I was working at my real job I could hire someone to do work on it. Now that I'm retired I can't afford it and need to do the work myself. During the past 9 months (when we were home from cruising) I've completely rehabbed 2 large units, everything from squirting the walls with texture, removing the popcorn, changing the electrical outlets, new kitchens & bathrooms etc. Never thought I'd be a contractor but after owning the boat and cruising for 12 years I feel I can do anything.
Usually say that when people ask me if I can do something. I answer,,, "I own a boat, I can do anything". (actually had the carpets installed by a contractor)
Hell, my tenants live in better accommodations than we do. I have to sell the boat before I can do my own house.
