He would have two 10" chartplotters zoomed out to cover Rockland to Stonington at that point? I doubt it, he just left Camden Harbor maybe 30-40 minutes ago which has two channels and several hazards( all of which have been hit in the last 10 years that I recall).
My speculation would be more likely the captain was,...distracted, or otherwise simply careless in knowing his position, for a few moments(all it takes).
And like every boat that has hit that rock in the last hundred years, that infamous rock, was clearly marked on a chart nearby the helm.
In this case, I'll wager two screens showed the Archangel ON the rock,...AT the moment,... OF,... impact.
