Backstay failed in the crash? 
Then something had to give. If you lose your backstay in that situation which I'm not sure you should. Then you are going to end up with rig breaking somewhere.
My question is: The 'slam-bam" of a stop at 7 - 8 knots shouldn't break a carbon fiber rig, should it?
