I just read a couple of books written over 100 years ago

by characters sailing small boats around England in the 1880s and 1890s. They didn't have anything except balls. No electricity, engines hadn't been invented, too much wind, too little wind, wind in wrong direction -- anchor. Even off exposed coasts -- because they had no choice. Fascinating tales.
