Some cats do have wimpy davits and the dinghy swings around on them. Particularly those with just angled poles sticking out the back of them. Ours has a multi-purchase system that I can single handed bring up a 350# dinghy in under a minute. Or heavier - we often leave it fully loaded with groceries, etc and I just bring it up to unload. We bring it up and down a couple of times each day. Heck, I could lead it to the electric winch if I wanted, but the tackle system takes the load off so much that it isn't necessary. When up in the davits, the dinghy is rock steady and locked in place. It becomes an extension of our cockpit - we put stuff in it, lay back against it, climb into it, etc. When full-time living aboard and cruising wide, there is nothing like having a large, powerful, fast SUV that never needs disassembly and can be in the water ready to go in 15 seconds (if I let it down faster, the rope burns my hands). I can't imagine taking that Pudgy or a rowing dinghy 5 miles offshore to spear fish on an open-ocean reef. Or traveling 10 miles to reach scenic rivers or provisioning towns with no nearby safe anchorages. We used our previous automobiles less than, and in easier conditions than we use our dinghy.
