I always hoist with the jacks deployed

For the reasons you mention, Jon. Hoisting goes a lot smoother when the sail remains flaked on the boom rather than falling off onto the deck where it is prone to catching things. My main is fully battened and generally speaking I only have to make sure the top batten clears the lazy jacks (the others in theory could but in practice it is pretty rare).
