Your understanding of this stuff is on a whole different plane than mine, no doubt about it... Thanks for that post, I figured they screwed up pretty badly, but I had no idea they missed that many chances to get it right... (grin)
However, I'll still stand by my opinion, that the SIMPLEST, and QUICKEST action that could have prevented this grounding, would have been for the navigator to have put his eyeballs on the British Admiralty chart of the Western Indian Ocean, between Mauritius and Oman... And, at a glance, in a matter of seconds, the danger of the Cargados Carajos Shoals would have been revealed to him... but again, that's probably just me...
And, I'm with Jeremy... Obviously, Nicholson's actions subsequent to the grounding, getting his crew safely thru the night, and off the boat without injury, were exemplary... But if you
re gonna fire the navigator, then it seems that the skipper must go, as well... Either keep them both, or relieve them both...
