Our Nobeltec (the old one and the "new-one", after MaxSea)

Has charts that are loaded on both on our mobile PC and the hard drive we have at the NAV Station. In the case of the boats on the Volvo Ocean Race, most of the pictures have them using mobile PC's. I'm SURE they must have redundant mobile PC's which are set-up so that you can plug-in a new one if the other goes "whatever-up" ;^))). Our boat is set-up that way.

Also, we have two Furuno units and two Northstar units that all work independantly. (We also have paper chart kits for the areas we sail in -- and beyond). I can't imagine the Volvo's not having plug-and-play redundancy.

If you are going to go "hi-tech" at "high speeds"...

Like most of us have agreed here, this is a case of too many excuses for a simple series of mistakes that ended their race and cost some money; BUT,thankfully, ended no lives. The observations about the zoom-in, zoom-out, etc. are interesting and "illuminating" for charts in that area; but it changes little about the fundamental causes which were pretty apparent shortly after the incident.
