Lets's assume he's doing his preliminary passage planning while sitting in the comfort of a nice hotel room in Cape Town. After all, that's the way many of us first begin thinking about or planning a vacation cruise or passage, from the comfort of our homes, or whatever...
Seems a bit convoluted to do the passage planning on his personal computer that would not have shown either the reef or the "chart bounds", then have to go to the boat to fire up the chartplotters to double-check his work, no? (grin)
Just seems a bit easier to initially spread out a paper chart... But again, that's probably just me...
Obviously, it's unfathomable why they only had (as I understand it, I could be wrong) one version of the detailed C-Map charts available, and it was not loaded into the computer primarily used for planning/routing...
