I spent most of my high school years in South Bay and returned again when offered a transfer from suburban Philly in 1981. I did not want to spend another winter in the Delaware Valley! We enjoyed our time living in Redondo for a couple of years but relocated to East Central Florida. We was able to afford a waterfront home on a navigable canal leading to the Banana River (83K in 1982). We would have had to commute about an hour and live in a half-duplex for 110K out there. There is no psychology here at all except my eyes glaze over when I read anyone wax rhapsodic about SOCAL climate. Too cold to enjoy the beach most of the year, water too cold to swim in almost always, think of one place you can go to be alone and twenty other folks are there already. Crowded roads, dirty air, yada, yada, yada ... Places I like... Anywhere on the Chesapeake Eastern Shore or from Calvert County south on the west side. Bahamas Out Islands. SW Florida above Naples to Sarasota/Bradenton. The immediate east coast of FLA from Fernandina to Stuart with the exception of Daytona Beach. Mexico, from Guaymas to Punta de Mita.
